The Museum Report is one of the summative assessments in this course; it is worth 15% of your overall grade. The report is intended to encourage you to engage with art in-person and in a real life setting. Museums are assets in our communities providing opportunities for personal enrichment that you should be aware and know how to access. I hope you enjoy learning about Museums as you work on this report.

Do Not use the following file types, (they will not be visible in Canvas and I will not be able to download or access them): .pages / .zip / or a url link to an online document).
OBJECTIVES
Identify the history and cultural context of current art museums.
Engage in self-guided exploration of the Visual Arts, and art objects as a form of cultural and social expression.
Analyze the Content, Form and Context of artworks from the selected museum, according to the concepts and vocabulary learned in this course.
INSTRUCTIONS:
For the museum report, Choose from one of the art museums listed below. Write a review of the museum covering the points below. Please start each section of your essay with the question you are answering (for an example, please see the sample file below)
Question 1: What is the history of the Museum?
To answer this section, look for information such as the following:
Where did the collection come from, how and why did it come together in this museum?
Why is it located where it is?
Question 2: What kind of artworks do they collect?
To answer this section, look for information such as the following:
how do they organize their collection?
How do they describe the different areas of their collection?
Is there any explanation of why they focus on those types of artworks?
Question 3: What artworks from the museum are the most popular, or most famous?
To answer this section, look for information such as the following:
look for a “highlights” or “featured” section on their website
Question 4: What Artworks Do I connect With?
To answer this question, choose 5 artworks from the museum you feel connected to because of something you learned in class. To discuss them more in-depth please address the following:
list each artwork in a separate paragraph. Begin the paragraph by identifying the artist, title, and date of creation for the artwork as the first line of the paragraph.
In one or two sentences, explain how and why you feel personally connected to this artwork (for example, what caught your attention and drew you in).
For the rest of the paragraph, explain a direct connection to something you learned in this class about Content, Form, Context, or Interpretation. This needs to be more than just a of the artwork, this should explicitly point out connections between some specific aspect of the artwork to something specifically learned about Content, Form, Context, or interpretation, and use vocabulary from the analysis worksheets.
Use the worksheets below and Teacher Notes to identify the concepts and vocabulary in Content, Form Context and/or interpretation that you should apply here.
Note: You should write about 5 pages. If you find you cannot write 5 pages about one museum, you can answer the above questions for a second museum. There is more information about the format below:

NOTE: USE ONLY MS WORD COMPATIBLE DOCUMENTS OR A PDF. DO NOT ATTACH A “GOOGLE DOCS” LINK, A “.ZIP” FILE OR “.PAGES” DOCUMENT. Here are my recommendations for text editing software: Writing Resources (Links to an external site.)
Avoid Plagiarism!
The paper is about your thoughts, your curiosity, and your experience. I have already read and am not interested in re-reading what has already been written about these places. I am interested only in your own impressions in your own words. Please read and understand the following Ventura College policies that define plagiarism and avoid plagiarism in your own paper.
Plagiarism: as defined by Ventura College:
Plagiarism is the act of presenting someone elses work as ones own. Examples include:
Copying and pasting text from websites or other electronic sources and presenting it in an assignment as your own original work.
Copying and pasting text from printed sources (including books, magazines, encyclopedias or newspapers) and presenting it in an assignment as your own original work.
Using another students work and claiming it as your own original work (even if you have the permission of the other student).
please review the full Academic Dishonesty policy of Ventura College here: Academic Dishonesty PolicyLinks to an external site..
CITE YOUR SOURCES:
It is very important that, if you choose to quote the words of others, that you give them proper credit for their intellectual products. In the world of academia, there are guidelines on how to give credit to your sources, this is called “citing” your sources, and when you include it in your report, it is called a “citation.” A citation has two important parts to it:
Acknowledge what you used:
if you copy any of the wording exactly, you need to use quotation marks (“”) around the wording to acknowledge that they are not your words; these are called direct quotes.
if you use the observations and ideas from your source, even if you rewrite it or put to put it into your own words, you need to point out that you used someone else’s ideas or observations. If you point out an observation or idea that is not your own, you need to point out where it came from.
Acknowledge where it came from:
give credit to the website, book, and/or author where your observations, ideas, or direct quotes came from by including a list at the end of the paper, or an inline citation.
There are many different styles for how to do a citation properly. For this kind of paper I like the MLA style. The link below is a good site for simple directions on how to create a proper MLA citation, Since you are probably using online sources to write this report, I suggest that you scroll down to the section “Citing Online Articles with no Author or Date” for guidance on how to create your citations. Link: MLA Citations.Links to an external site.
If you would like a more in-depth tutorial on MLA citation style, here is another good resource: Link: Purdue Writing LabLinks to an external site.
Please keep in mind that the instruction above (see “Required Paper Format”) ask that you limit quotations from other sources. I much prefer that you put things in your own words.
DON’T OVERUSE CITATIONS
While you might find interesting information on websites or books, the whole idea of this assignment is for you to make your own observations. If you are authentically making your own observations, then you will not need to make many citations. I am much more interested in what you have noticed from looking yourself, not what you find that other people have noticed. For that reason, please pay attention to your plagiarism score (described below).
PLAGIARISM DETECTION
Your submission will be submitted through plagiarism detection software, so please be careful to submit only your own original work. The detection software will generate a report and show a percentage of how much of the paper is not your own work. Taking into account cited quotations and artwork identifications, your plagiarism percentage score should be under 10%.
