Part I: Analysis of Mission, Vision, Value Statements (NELP 1.1)

Action Items:

Analysis of current mission, vision, and value statements within 2 schools: (a) your own school site and (b) another school within your state that has contrasting demographics (NELP 1.1).

In Part I of the assignment candidates will write an analysis of the current mission, vision, and value statements at two schools: (a) your own school site and (b) another school within your state that has contrasting demographics (NELP 1.1). Your analysis should include a reflection on how each mission and vision support the current and future success and well-being of each student and adult and the characteristics of the mission and vision in terms of democratic values, data use, technology, equity, diversity, digital citizenship, and community. Through the lens of social justice, evaluate the statements and process of the creation and revision of the mission, vision, and values. Who is included/excluded? Who benefits from these statements? How do the statements promote, address, or omit social justice? You may find that some schools have mission, vision, and value statements and some may have only one of these statements, so if the school you select does not have all three, review only the statements that are available. In addition, you may notice some of these statements are old and have never been revised, so be sure to provide a discussion regarding this aspect. Consider the following in your analysis.

Core values that reflect those traits the school honors and implements.
Vision statements that reflect what the leadership conceives or sees as the future landscape.
Mission statements that help guide the implementation of the vision and inform a strategic plan.

Core values, vision, and mission are interdependent, and collectively they represent the philosophy and direction of your individual school and/or district (i.e., based on your organizational structure). Keeping them simple, so everyone understands them and lives by them is vital; this includes everyone in the district, all employees, all students, all parents, and the community making it very important to include the perspectives of all stakeholders in the development of these statements.

Part II: Developing a Mission and Vision

Action Items:

Collaborate with Stakeholders (faculty, parents, & community members) in your school site to develop and communicate a school mission and vision designed to reflect a core set of values and priorities that include data use, technology, equity, diversity, digital citizenship, and community (NELP 1.1)

Next you will develop a mission and vision based on the school’s core values and priorities that include data use, technology, equity, diversity, digital citizenship, and community (NELP 1.1). This will include a of the process of developing your mission and vision. To develop the mission and vision, you should include collaborative work with your administration to review/collect needed data and determine their needs and expectations regarding student learning. You will collaborate with at least three (3) additional stakeholders to include a parent or family member, a faculty member, and a community representative such as a PTA member or volunteer at your school. Also, keep in mind the philosophy of distributed (i.e., shared) leadership by engaging all stakeholders in this task and be sure to actively engage the stakeholders in the mission and vision development (NELP 1.1). Northouse (2018) stated that distributed leadership involves the sharing of influence by team members who step forward when situations warrant providing the leadership necessary and then stepping back to allow others to lead. It is a team activity where an entire team enacts leadership. Document your collaboration within the of the process of developing your mission and vision. Describe a comprehensive plan for communicating the school vision and mission, including 2 potential barriers to successful implementation and how those might be addressed.

Part III: Process for Continuous Improvement (NELP 1.2, 4.2, 6.1, 7.2)

Action Items:

Gather data on instructional practices, resources, technologies, and services, paying particular attention to the coordination and coherence among these aspects and how well they support equity, digital literacy, and the school’s academic and non-academic systems (NELP 4.2)
Analyze the data and identify needed changes/interventions to improve the impact of academic and non-academic practices, resources, and services that support student learning (NELP 4.2)
Describe the steps of your plan of action for a collaborative school improvement process that is supported by data and research, and how this process will be evaluated. Include a of the following components: diagnosis, design, implementation, and evaluation (NELP 1.2).
Conduct an audit of the equity and efficiency of school processes and operations (NELP 6.1) Use the Audit provided in your online course.
Review audit findings to identify strategies for implementing more equitable and efficient systems (6.1)
Identify steps to evaluate the school improvement process (1.2)
Describe how you will engage staff in activities and processes to cultivate a collaborative professional culture designed to promote school improvement, teacher retention, and the success and well-being of each student and adult in the school (NELP 7.2).

School improvement stems from having an established common goal that focuses on high expectations for student learning. In Part 3 of this assignment, you will document your developed plan of action for a collaborative school improvement process within your school site and how this process will be evaluated (NELP 1.2). You will gather data on existing improvement processes (NELP 1.2), and instructional practices, resources, technologies and both academic and non-academic services at your school (NELP 4.2). It is recommended that you meet and work with a school administrator at your school who can assist in gathering this data. After reviewing the data, you will write an analysis of your findings and identify areas of improvements and refinements to the services to support your mission and vision (NELP 4.2). Next, design the steps of your plan of action for a collaborative school improvement process that is supported by data and research, and how this process will be evaluated. Include a of the following components: diagnosis, design, implementation, and evaluation (NELP 1.2).

The next step in this assignment is essential to the success of continuous improvement efforts; namely, to ensure the school processes and operations have the capability to support sustained long-term improvement. In this step, you will conduct an audit of the equity and efficiency of your schools’ processes and operations (NELP 6.1) After reviewing the audit information, write an analysis of your findings, including strategic and tactical challenges for the school’s systems, and identify strategies for implementing more equitable and efficient systems that support each student’s learning needs and promote the mission and vision of the school (NELP 6.1) Your audit responses will be placed in the appendices as artifacts for the final written assignment.

As you reflect on the development of your mission and vision, and school improvement plan, describe how you will engage staff in activities and processes to cultivate a collaborative professional culture designed to promote school improvement, teacher retention, and the success and well-being of each student and adult in the school. In what ways will your plan provide a healthy and positive school building environment that fosters effective communication (NELP 7.2)?

The final product for this assignment will be the final written assignment and a multi-media presentation to transfer knowledge and understanding to all stakeholders of your school regarding your vision, mission, and plan for continuous improvement. You may use Prezi or PowerPoint for the multi-media presentation.
