During the COVID-19 pandemic many were at an advantage and disadvantage when it came to working with human resources. Because of the no contact many organizations began to utilize virtual appointments. Many forms were involved, zoom, doxy, skype, telephone calls etc. But how effective or ineffective were they?
As beneficial as virtual appointments can be to some there were some disadvantages. Barriers to adult learning in a virtual world environment included technology glitches, the learning curve for newcomers, technology addiction in immersive environment, and funding challenges for non-profit organizations and small business (McWhorter, 2023). Increased stress and decreased support among some foster parenting and increase systematic and structural barriers to service delivery for immigrant origin families involved in the child welfare system (Jang, 2023). Not every employee has the necessary technology access to accomplish their work tasks in a productive and timely manner (McWhorter, 2023). Empirical studies have highlighted mixed results, suggesting a potential gap between technological advancements and their effectiveness (Jang, 2023.) A scoping review of 36 articles published between 2009 and 2019 has found some pitfalls of technology use for human services (Jang, 2023).
Virtual appointments are beneficial if you do not have the mode of transportation available to make appointments. It is helpful if you have children and no one to watch them. There are pros to virtual appointments. But there are more disadvantages that I have witnessed hands on. As a human resource worker/ healthcare worker we often have consumers who do not have modern technology, those who struggle with signing into virtual visits, those who ignore their appointments more. Unfortunately, virtual appointments also make it harder to do diagnosis, complete referrals, and see their physical health maintenance. As a worker who deals with those with addiction, we keep virtual appointments because guiding consumers is important to us to better their lives. But we cannot do certain things. Drug screenings are impossible virtually. Another issue is if there are others around, they are not as open to talking. Virtual appointments can be beneficial, but we miss out on a massive part of our task of caring for our consumers.

This pandemic was a worldwide problem that needs continued funding and assistance. Each article shows that it was not just COVID-19 that brought attention to mental health issues that need support and financial contribution for continued assistance. There are daily events, stresses, and past and potential biohazardous that continually affect everyone around the world. It takes every human service professional in every position from individuals clear up to government officials to keep addressing how mental health affects everyone at some point. Original Discussion Prompt:
In your textbook, you reviewed what impact more current history has had on human services. Current events and news stories can shed a lot of light on the trends impacting human services agencies. Locate two different newspaper or journal articles on the same issue, published within the last year. To locate articles through the SNHU Shapiro Library, use the Multi-Search option on the Shapiro Library homepage under the “Find books, articles, and more:” heading. And follow these steps:
Type a search phrase into the search box and click Search.
Refine search to items with “full text online.”
Refine search to desired content type.
Fill in the Publication Date fields to limit your search to articles published within the last year.
Post a summary of the issue and information from both articles that best describe the issue. Explain how the issue impacts the work of human services agencies.
Example of How to Respond to a Student Discussion Post
Hi Nita,
I like how you discuss both the teacher observing the student and the student observing their own art. You bring up excellent points about the teachers observing the children, because it does help the teacher to better communicate with the children and understand them better. As teachers, it is very important to nurture students, particularly if they are very young, I think, because it allows them to better understand the needs of the student, and how to work with them. Paying attention to what the student is drawing, and seeing how the student reacts to their own work can improve the teachers understanding.
Expressing feelings in this discussion board reply examples is a major component of growing up. The more a student is able to express those feelings, the more they can understand them. I liked reading about what you said on this topic, and I agree that the art is a very useful tool that students can learn to express their feelings effectively. If they do not express them, they are keeping them inside, and drawing can become a form of counseling for them. In my opinion, I think the drawing can be particularly useful for many students who are quiet. These students do not often express themselves verbally, and drawing can be a way for them to understand their feelings, and to release some pent up sadness of hostile feelings, for example. I think this form of therapy sticks with many people throughout life, and they continue to use drawing as a coping mechanism.
Thanks,
Steven
